About
Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé founded the house in Paris in 1961, and it helped shape modern womenswear with ideas such as the tuxedo for women and luxury ready-to-wear boutiques. Perfume was important from early on, and Opium caused a sensation on its release in 1977. Kering bought the fashion house in 1999, while the beauty business went to L'Oréal in 2008, which has since developed the fragrances under the YSL Beauty name. Later successes include Black Opium, Libre and Y for men.
