About
Jean Paul Gaultier, a designer without formal training who began as an assistant to Pierre Cardin, founded his own label in 1982 and became known for corsets, sailor stripes and an irreverent take on couture. The house moved into fragrance in 1993, and Le Male followed in 1995, composed by Francis Kurkdjian; it became one of the best-selling masculine scents in the world. Puig became majority shareholder by buying the stake held by Hermès along with part of the designer's own shares. Gaultier retired from the runway in 2020, while the perfume line continues to expand.
