About
Gabrielle Chanel opened her first independent millinery shop, Chanel Modes, at 31 rue Cambon in Paris in 1910, and the house expanded into couture, ready-to-wear, accessories and beauty. Its perfume business has long rested on N°5, which remains closely tied to the brand's image. Chanel is privately owned by the brothers Alain and Gérard Wertheimer through Chanel Limited, a holding company set up in 2018 and based in London. Alongside its widely sold fragrances, the house keeps a smaller boutique range that draws on symbols from the founder's life and work.
