About
Thomas Burberry opened a draper's shop in Basingstoke in 1856 and later developed gabardine, a weatherproof fabric that led to the trench coat. The company is now headquartered in London and listed on the London Stock Exchange. Its fragrance business has moved between licensing and direct control: the beauty licence was brought back in-house during Angela Ahrendts's time as chief executive, and in 2017 Burberry licensed its fragrance and make-up to Coty. Recent launches centre on large franchises, with Her for women, Hero for men and the vanilla-led Goddess.
